Regional Innovation in Murcia (Spain)

Area and Population

The Autonomous Community of the Murcia Region is one of Spain's seventeen autonomous communities. It is located in the southeast of the country, between Andalusia and the Valencia Community on the Mediterranean coast. It consists of a single province – Region-, unlike most autonomous communities, which have several provinces within the same region; the autonomous community and the province are operated as one unit of government. The city of Murcia is the capital of the Region. The autonomous community is subdivided in 46 municipalities, the most populated being Murcia, Cartagena, Lorca, and Molina de Segura. Murcia’s territory measures 11,313 km² and comprises an overall population of 1,424,063 inhabitants (according to 2008 figures) of which almost a third, live in the capital –Murcia city-, this figure makes up 3.0% of totality of the Spanish population.
