Regional Innovation in Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur (France)

The picture emerging from the innovation diagnostic of PACA is a strong service driven economy empowered by a high tech industry having a significant weight in terms of employment. This high potential territory which is characterized by very dynamic economic innovation actors and environment has some weaknesses : the economic and research network is very fragmented, the technology transfer offer is far from being perfect and the regional service offer for company assistance and coaching is not clear enough.

Enterprises, mainly SME engaged in an innovation process who benefit from coaching and who master technological innovation, have important difficulties when they are looking for public or private funding or when they have to deal with human resources management, training or market access for their innovative products or services.

There is no appropriate answer yet in terms of availability of funds for innovation cycle financing (mainly to start a new activity, for the design phase or for prototype elaboration) or for services to the enterprises. In 2007 the creation of the Regional Innovation Network was a first step towards a better enterprise coaching offer and associated services for innovative businesses. The RIN will be consolidated through professionalization of coaches and design of new services more adapted for new enterprises.
Technology transfer and research valorization evolved rapidly thanks to a dynamic cluster policy and support from the public institution to collaborative projects and platforms. Collaboration between universities and research centers has been recently reinforced and valorization activities have been grouped under a unique umbrella.
