I. Overview of Regional profile

It is observed that among 47 metropolis that fill the demographic criterion Athens (in this case Attica Region) comes 8th regarding population statistics, 20th when it comes to economic growth, while 33rd and 34th referring regional development and productivity of secondary sector respectively.
 
London comes first in terms of population, level of economy growth and degree of accessibility as well. The metropolis with the higher level of income and growth is Hamburg, while the Utrecht has the lower rate of unemployment. Regarding participation in secondary sector and tertiary economy development Ostrava and Paris come first respectively.
 
Through the results of a comparative analysis among European metropolises, Athens is one of the bigger metropolises in Europe in terms of population, however, falls short concerning economy growth compared with the westerners metropolises. Intensely, high level of tertiary economy can lead to regional development under certain circumstances, regarded as the main lever of growth creating job opportunities as well.

II. Geographical Location

Attica Region is found in the central department of Greece. More specifically Attica is seated in the south-eastern department of “Sterea Hellas” and is divided in 4 main sub-areas; Western, East, North Attica and the Prefecture of Piraeus as well. Its extent comes up to 3.808 km2 covering the 2, 9% of total extent of the country. Attica is seated in Athens which also constitutes the Capital of Greece.
 
III. Financial

Attica Region possesses the 40% of national GDP while the 79, 86% of Attica Regions’ productivity comes from tertiary sector according to the Sectoral Structure Analysis of Attica Region. Within 2003, Attica Region assembles the 43, 7% of industrial enterprises the 43,4 % of employees while it is produced the 42% of GRDP

Primary Sector in Attica Region holds only the 0, 57% while secondary sector comes up to 19, 57% of total GRDP, numbering 69.357 companies which constitutes the 22, 09% of regional companies. The turnover of secondary sector in Attica Region comes up to 53.965,56 million euro, that equals the 33, 67% of total regional turnover.


IV. Population

Considering the available data, population of Attica Region has increased within the last 40 years. According to the statistics of the last Population Inventory of 2001, the real population of Attica Region within the last decade (1991-2001) has increased in a rate of 6,77% amounted in 3.761.810 residents. Thus, even if hardly covers the 2, 9% of total extent of Greece, Attica Region assembles country’s 34, 3% total population, that consequently defines her Metropolitan character.
